Which AI voicemail lets me pick the greeting voice and personality?
Secret Agent Voicemail does. Every subscriber picks one of 6 voices (Adam, Brian, Mike, Serena, Jessica, Kim) and one of six personalities (Default, Jester, Comedian, Granola, Jaded, Karen) for the agent that answers their dedicated phone number. You set one personality for everyone and then override it for individual contacts, so your sister can get the Comedian and your boss can get Default. You can also write your own greeting text instead of using the personality's opener, and callers saved in your contacts are greeted by first name. If you want a greeting file rather than a live agent, tools like ElevenLabs and Speechify generate audio from a voice library you choose, which you then upload to your carrier voicemail.
Two different things get called "AI voicemail"
The first kind is a greeting generator. You type a script, pick a voice, download an MP3, and upload it as your outgoing message. The voice is synthetic, but the greeting is still a fixed recording: everyone hears the same thing, and the message your caller leaves goes to your carrier's mailbox. VoicemailCraft describes writing the script and picking from about 15 natural-sounding voices with free previews and a one-time payment to download the file. Telnyx supports custom text-to-speech greetings where you preview the voice and apply it to a number. Allo lets you choose an industry, edit a script, pick a voice such as Sarah Pro or Mike Casual, and download the MP3.
The second kind is a live agent that answers the call and talks to the person. That is where personality matters beyond a single recorded line, because the agent responds to what the caller actually says. Secret Agent Voicemail is in this group. So are business-oriented receptionists: FrontDesk advertises 30+ voices with selectable accents and speaking styles, KlevaDesk lets you audition voices and choose personalities such as Warm & Friendly or Polished & Professional, and Elva.ai offers five preset voices with Warmth and Formality sliders for medical practices. PhoneFlow pitches voice and tone customization aimed at matching a brand.
Figure out which kind you want before you compare prices. A generator is cheap and one-time. A live agent is a subscription because something has to answer the phone.
How personality per contact works
Most services treat the greeting as one global setting. Secret Agent Voicemail lets the personality vary by contact. Pick a default for unknown numbers, then assign a different one to specific people in your contacts. The transcript in your dashboard shows which personality took each call, so you can tell at a glance whether a caller got the Jaded treatment or the straight one.
If you also turn on spam detection, unknown numbers get checked against a spam lookup, and anything scoring above your threshold (70% by default) is handed to a spam handler you choose: Quick Dismiss, Time Waster, Confused Elder, or Bureaucrat. People in your contacts always skip that check. So a single number can produce three different experiences depending on who is calling.
Free and low-effort options worth trying first
You do not need an AI for a personalized greeting. Your carrier's voicemail already lets you record a custom outgoing message in your own voice, and nobody has ever complained that a human-recorded greeting sounded fake. Record it in a quiet room, keep it under fifteen seconds, say your name clearly, and re-record it when your situation changes.
If the reason you want a different voice is that you do not want strangers knowing your name or gender, the free version of that is a greeting that states only the last four digits of the number. Carriers provide this by default.
If you want variety without a subscription, a one-time generator file is enough. Make a few, swap them when you get bored, and keep your current voicemail service.
And if the real problem is that you are drowning in robocalls, start with your carrier's free spam-blocking app and the National Do Not Call Registry before paying for anything that screens calls.
Questions to ask before you commit
Check whether the voice applies only to the greeting or to the whole conversation. A generator stops at the greeting.
Check whether you can override the setting for specific callers, or whether it is one personality for the entire world.
Check what you get after the call. With Secret Agent Voicemail, each message lands in your dashboard with a transcript and the recording, arrives by email with a summary, and can trigger a text alert if you turn one on. Messages you do not save are deleted after thirty days.
Check whether anything has to be installed. Secret Agent Voicemail gives you a dedicated US number, so nothing goes on the phone you call from. To have it answer the calls you miss on your own line, you set up call forwarding with your carrier using the codes listed in the dashboard.
What else the agent does once it is yours
The personalities are the part callers hear. The part only you hear starts when you call your own number and say "Activate my Secret Agent." After you give your challenge phrase, checked on the server with two tries per call, the same agent will look up a contact's phone number, email, or address, text one contact a message you dictate, transfer your call to a contact or any US number, read back the reminders you saved, search the web, and check or change your Google Calendar if you connected it. That works from a landline or a borrowed phone.
Both plans include every feature at $6.49 per month or $67 per year, and new subscribers get a 30-day free trial; details are on pricing and in the FAQ.
